Among other things, the Trump Administration taught us that the norms, rules and laws expected of an American President can be rejected without consequence. Many claim the abuse of power for political or personal gain by this president is unique to modern history and may have permanently damaged our democracy. Some of these abuses include profiting from his presidency; colluding with Russia to win the Presidency, and obstructing the resulting Mueller and Congressional investigations; politicizing the Justice Department and FBI to serve his personal needs; conspiring with Ukraine to announce a baseless investigation into the Bidens in order to help his re-election; firing several inspectors general and whistleblowers after they criticized his administration; telling 30,573 misleading or false claims over four years – including the big lie that he won reelection; and preventing the peaceful transfer of power by encouraging his followers to storm our Capitol. Critics also claim his pardon process, conducted without input from the Justice Department, undercut anti-corruption efforts and undermined the rule of law.

Advocates claim we need to restore the proper balance of power between the president and Congress, particularly when it comes to the president’s use of emergency powers. They say institutional checks are needed to prevent presidential overreach and abuse.

  • I oppose reforming current Presidential power policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Mike Johnson (LA).
  • I support preventing abuses of presidential power, restoring checks and balances and accountability and transparency in government, and defending elections against foreign interference by: 1.) Requiring the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the President to submit to Congress specified materials relating to certain pardons, and prohibiting presidential self-pardons. 2.) Suspending the statute of limitations for federal offenses committed by a sitting President or Vice President 3.) Prohibiting the acceptance of foreign or domestic emoluments, and sets forth provisions regarding Office of Government Ethics and Office of Special Counsel jurisdiction and enforcement authority. 4.) Authorizing specified actions to enforce congressional subpoenas, imposing limits on presidential declarations of emergencies, requiring DOJ to maintain a log of specified communications between it and the White House, requiring cause for removal of inspectors general, increasing whistleblower protections. 5.) Requiring a candidate for President or Vice President to provide copies of tax returns for the 10 most recent taxable years to the Federal Election Commission. 6.) Requiring federal campaign reporting of foreign contacts, makes various changes to requirements concerning foreign donations to political campaigns and candidates and foreign contributions to online electioneering communications. 7.) Prohibiting distribution of materially deceptive audio or visual media prior to an election (i.e., deepfakes), and establishing a program to support states and localities transition to ranked choice voting systems. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Mike Johnson (LA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
